Assessor Training
Who is the course aimed at? This Level 3 award is ideal if you assess, or want to assess, the achievement of competence in the workplace. It is a mandatory requirement for the assessment of NVQ/QCF based qualifications and replaces the previous assessor qualifications such as A1, A2, D32 and D33.
This qualification is ideal if you want to assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the work environment (for example, a workshop, classroom or another training environment).
About the course: The Level 3 course provides a pathway for learners to understand assessment and if required, qualify as an assessor. Learners who wish to achieve these units could be assessing competence or non-competence based learning, knowledge or skills. They will select the units and qualifications that meet the requirements of what they are assessing.
There are three awards and a certificate available at Level 3: The Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment: this is a knowledge only award for those who are starting their journey as an assessor, or for those who need to know about assessment practice but are not currently practising.
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment: this is for practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using the following assessment methods:
- Observation
- Examining work products
- Oral questioning and discussion
- Use of witnesses
- Learner statements
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement: this is for practitioners who assess knowledge and/or skills in vocationally related subject areas using the following assessment methods:
- Assessments in simulated environments
- Skills tests
- Oral and written questions
- Assignments
- Projects

- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement: this is for practitioners who may use all of the above-listed assessment methods based upon sound assessment principles. If you want to train as an assessor with this qualification, you should have a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in the subject area that you want to assess.
Your tutor will also observe you through practical work-based activities, where the theory you learn can be put into practice.
Theory and practical assessments take place once a week, and the remainder of the week you will be working in an office-based environment.
The length of award: This course lasts 9 months.
