What is the Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher apprenticeship?
This apprenticeship is ideal for those teaching young people and adults, including those teaching in work-based / independent training provision, further & higher education settings, and many others.
Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher apprentices will learn how to deliver effective training that is current, relevant, challenging and inspires their learners to engage and achieve their full potential.

All apprentices must hold Functional skills English Level 2 & Functional skills Maths Level 2 qualifications by the end of their apprenticeship.
How much does the apprenticeship cost?
You can get help from the government to pay for apprenticeship training. The amount you get depends on whether you pay the apprenticeship levy or not. You could be eligible for extra funding depending on both your and your apprentice’s circumstances.
You can use your Apprentice Levy funding towards the cost of this apprenticeship. You pay the levy if you’re an employer with a pay bill over £3 million each year.
If you do not need to pay the levy, you pay 5% towards the cost of training and assessing your apprentice. For this apprenticeship, this is £500.
Additionally, there are also incentive payments for employers who hire a new apprentice between 1 August 2020 and 31 March 2021. You can apply for the payment until 30 April 2021.

Entry Requirements
Individual employers may set any entry requirements but these may typically include:
- Competence in vocational and/or specialist subject at an appropriate level
- Confirmation of current vocational/specialist subject knowledge
- Up to date knowledge of workplace practice
- A willingness to continue to develop personal ICT skills to a level in-line with the LST role
- Reference to the Education and Training Foundation’s (2016) Minimum Core Guidance, and any subsequent updates.
- Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end point assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3 and British Sign Language qualification is an alternative to English qualifications for whom this is their primary language.
Qualifications
Outcomes of this standard must include:
- Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or equivalent
- Level 2 Safeguarding
- Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end point assessment.
All the above outcomes must be achieved before the end-point assessment.
Progression
With the employer’s approval, the LST could progress onto curriculum/training leadership roles following an adequate period of experience teaching at this level, within the sector.

Anyone 16 years old or older can be an apprentice if they are not in full-time education or undertaking any other government-funded training. There is no upper age limit, making an apprenticeship an ideal way of upskilling your existing staff.

After their Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher apprenticeship, your apprentice will the skills, experience, and confidence they need to excel within your organisation and to teach and inspire others. They may work progress to other curriculum/training leadership roles, depending on experience.
